Tips For Moped Drivers To Avoid Accidents

Tips For Moped Drivers To Avoid Accidents

Mopeds are even smaller than motorcycles, which is why a lot of people like them. They’re great for zipping around the city. They barely use any gas, they’re far cheaper to buy than many motorcycles or cars and they offer an economic option.

Unfortunately, that small size also comes with risks. It’s far more likely that a moped rider will be injured in an accident with a car. Mopeds are also small enough that other drivers may simply not see them; this is also an issue with motorcycles and bicycles. Below are a few tips that can help riders stay safe:

  • Wear a helmet. Yes, many mopeds only go 25-45 miles per hour, but a helmet can still save your life in an accident.
  • Follow all traffic laws. You’ve probably seen cyclists pedal their way through red lights. Don’t do it. Drive a moped just like it’s a car, following all traffic signals and laws.
  • Taking riding classes. You had to take classes before getting your driver’s license, and doing the same thing before riding a moped can really help. The more you know, the safer you’ll be.
  • Watch out for weather complications. Don’t get caught out in a storm, as even a deep puddle — which a car may plow through with no problem — can be dangerous on a moped.
  • Check your moped over before using it. Specifically, check the turn signals, the headlight and the taillight.

Of course, all of these tips may still not prevent you from being hit by a negligent driver. If you are, make sure you know what legal options you have.
